This blog is brought to you by JustUnfollow, an easy way to follow and unfollow twitter users.

Lady Gaga is the most powerful person on Twitter, with almost 19 million twitter followers, she is the most followed on this Twitterverse (source: Twitaholic ). I believe, if Twitter is a country in itself, Gaga would be the president. I became a fan, maybe, 3-4 years ago. And every year, I love her even more. Lady Gaga is more than her catchy songs, out of this world vidoes, outrageous outfits, and meatdresses. She is a living testimony of bravery and a moving masterpiece. Yes, I would not have joined Twitter without Gaga in it. Yes, Gaga is power.

I was quite surprised that there are several like me, hardcore 'Little Monsters' on Twitter, with accounts solely dedicated to Mother Monster. I, myself, have an account named after her. It is beautiful to share ideas, thoughts, and even happiness with people with similar interests. With just a tweet, 140 characters or less, we understand each other, just like brothers. Yes, mutual agreement and understanding also happens in cyberworld.

Twitter also changed the way fans interact with their idols. Us, Little Monsters, always get excited when Gaga tweets since she tweets less compared to other artists. We can also express our love to our idols through this device. And if you are lucky, your idol can send her love back! What also made Twitter amazing is that it is real time. You will know or guess if your fave celeb is online, having fun, or in a bad mood. And speaking of real time, trending topics can be controlled by some fanbases. Yes, some. Others are not powerful enough. :-)

The fanbase of Gaga - Little Monsters - is one of world's most powerful. We can create trending topics worldwide if we want to. And this is fueled even more when Gaga tweets. Her every word can be a TT (trending topic)!

Here you see the power of a celebrity in this alternative universe. But surprisingly, you will also realize that the power is also on the 'fingertips' of the ordinary people. Well, somehow in Twitterverse, we can experience power we never had at the real world. And that is a #fact.

Wed, 02 Nov 2011 06:16:00 -0700 Top 3 reasons why you are not able to follow anyone on twitter http://blog.justunfollow.com/3-top-reasons-why-you-are-not-able-to-follow http://blog.justunfollow.com/3-top-reasons-why-you-are-not-able-to-follow

I keep getting asked by JustUnfollow users why they are unable to follow anyone on twitter. Here are the top 3 reasons why your twitter account is not able to follow any other twitter user.

1. You have hit the 2000 follow limit

I know, you can see others following more than 2000 users and you ask how? Well, twitter has this thing where they allow you to follow up to 2000 users without bothering you. Once you hit the 2000 follow limit they will then stop you from following more users until you get 2000 followers.

A solution to this is to either unfollow those who do not follow you or unfollow inactive twitter users. JustUnfollow let's you do just that.

2. You have more than 2000 followers but you're still not able to follow more

Oh, did I tell you, once you cross 2000 it will always be that you can follow only 10% of the number of followers you have. Say you have 5000 followers and you are following 4000 users, then you can only follow  (10% of your 5000 followers) i.e. 500 more. (I'm not too sure about this so please correct me if I'm wrong)

3. When point 1 and 2 do not apply to you

This is the classic 1000 follows a day limit. Whatever be your follower or friend count, you cannot follow more than 1000 twitter users in a day. We face this problem a lot when trying to follow back those who follow us since @JustUnfollow gets way more than 1000 new twitter followers a day.

Well, these are pretty much the points that I can think of as to why twitter would not allow you to follow more users. If I've missed out on any points then please let me know so that I can update this post.

Sat, 22 Oct 2011 17:22:00 -0700 Top 10 reasons why users unfollow you on twitter http://blog.justunfollow.com/top-10-reasons-why-users-unfollow-you-on-twit http://blog.justunfollow.com/top-10-reasons-why-users-unfollow-you-on-twit

We asked our 200,000 friends on twitter who are all users of JustUnfollow as to why they would unfollow someone and these are the top 10 reasons we got.

1. Not following them back (non followers get unfollowed on http://justunfollow.com )

Most users want to be followed back. Unless maybe if you are a celebrity or a news agency.

2. They don't tweet at all

If you are inactive on twitter you will most likely be unfollowed eventually. Companies and brands should make it a point to tweet regularly to their users.

3. Uninteresting tweets

If you do not tweet the latest movie trailers or the latest news or some funny quotes be prepared to be unfollowed.

4. Too many tweets (Solution: use our new app http://justlater.com )

Users who tweet in bursts end up clogging the timeline of their followers. This is one of the main reasons why you can get unfollowed on twitter

5. Spam links

You won a million dollars by visiting a link? Or you became a Mafia somewhere? You better not tell it to your followers else they are sure to unfollow you.

6. Only RTing all the time

Many people do this in order to stay "active" on twitter. Just RT tweets at random. But unless you do not tweet your own original stuff your followers will realize sooner or later that you are an RT freak and unfollow you.

7. Difference of Opinion. I like Obama and you don't. I will unfollow you

Many users want people they follow to conform to their line of thought. Conflicting interests would mean you would get unfollowed.

8. Entering and tweeting about competitions and asking followers to join

Yeah, it's cool to receive a free iPad but not cool to see those tweets on the timeline. Most people take these competitions to be spam and scams.

9. Talking about sex all the time

Talk about Sex all day or tweet hate messages and people will unfollow you.

10. Welcome DM on following

This sucks big time. We receive 100s of DMs. A "thank you for following me" DM is not welcome anywhere.

We received a lot of replies to this question. It's a good thing we have Buffr to help us easily reply to all these queries. Buffr is a work in progress and I'm pretty impressed with how handy it has been in helping us interact with all our followers.

Happy day today! JustUnfollow now has an Alexa rank of 4991 which means we're one among the Top 5000 websites of the world according to Alexa!

Just a few stats as of today :

1. We have 326,000 registered users
2. Since launch we've seen over 115 million unfollows
3. On a regular day more than 0.5 million users get unfollowed using JustUnfollow

With JustUnfollow you can do the following:

1. Show Non Followers - Find and unfollow users who do not follow you back
2. Show Fans - Find and follow users who follow you
3. Show Inactive Following - Find and unfollow inactive twitter users i.e. users who have not tweeted from a long time
4. Whitelist - Add users you do not wish to unfollow to the Whitelist
5. FriendFollower - Follow another twitter account's followers (currently being tested hence access to Premium accounts only). This helps you gain new followers in your niche since you can copy accounts that are similar to yours

Mon, 11 Jul 2011 16:58:44 -0700 Find who are the inactive users on twitter and unfollow them http://blog.justunfollow.com/find-who-are-the-inactive-users-on-twitter-an http://blog.justunfollow.com/find-who-are-the-inactive-users-on-twitter-an We're launching a new feature! Login to JustUnfollow and click the Show Inactive Following button. You will then be able to see users who have been inactive i.e. those who have not tweeted from the last 1 month or 3 month or more than 6 months. We've made it fast, so you don't have to wait too long to get the list of inactive users that you may be following on twitter.

What's the point of following a twitter account that hasn't tweeted in the last 6 months? In all probability these accounts are dormant and they will never be used again. So instead of having them increase the number of people you may be following on twitter, it's a good idea to JustUnfollow them!

Hope you find the Show Inactive Following feature useful. Looking forward to your views and suggestions about this feature.

Justunfollow-better-whitelist-

We introduced the whitelist feature a few months ago. The use of whitelist has been steadily increasing and we've been getting some feature requests.

I'm glad to announce improvements to whitelist. You will now be able to view all the users in your whitelist (previously you could only view the first 100 users that you had whitelisted).

A big change to this release is that you can now see the friendship status between you and whitelisted users. This helps you know if any of the whitelisted users have started following you back!

Justunfollow-copy-followers-fo

Many a times you don't know where to find like minded twitter users or if you are a business then finding the right audience on twitter can be difficult. I agree there are a lot of twitter user search apps out there but it's an overwhelming number of users to choose from.

Sometimes, the best way to find new users to follow is to pick a twitter account that might have interests similar to yours and follow the people following them. More than individuals, this would work better for businesses that have accounts on twitter. Businesses can easily follow the followers of their competitors.

Why you should follow the followers of a competing twitter account is pretty obvious. If I am following @pizzahut it very well means that I love to eat pizza (well who doesn't like pizza!). So, I would very well be interested in a new pizza place and when I see that @dominos is following me, I'll most probably check them out, follow them and even try ordering pizza from them someday!

We call this feature Copy Followers and it helps you follow a twitter user's followers. It is currently available for JustUnfollow Premium users. We might make it available for our free users in the future.

We've made a few changes to the JustUnfollow interface.

  1. Every row of user displayed will now have the 'Following' and 'Follower' label against it so that you don't have to scroll up and see the headings.
  2. When we display users who unfollowed you or are not following you back as well as when we display your fans, the JustUnfollow logo will now be hidden.

Wed, 20 Apr 2011 04:18:15 -0700 3 retries before giving up http://blog.justunfollow.com/3-retries-before-giving-up http://blog.justunfollow.com/3-retries-before-giving-up Many a times there are timeouts while connecting to twitter. This becomes a problem when you have a lot of followers and friends and the connection times out while we fetch your follower and friend info.

Until recently, on timeouts we were asking users to reload the page and try again because that seemed like the easy way out. But easy isn't fun and it eats into your twitter API limit since the whole process of calculating non followers starts again.

We just pushed code that would now retry a maximum of 3 times in case there is an error while accessing your list of friends and followers from twitter. This should reduce the error messages you previously received asking you to do a page refresh.

This was a big pain in the ass since when you try to follow such accounts, twitter would throw an error saying there was already a pending follow request against the user.

From now on, we would be automagically hiding such users. So go on, follow back all your Fans, there won't be any fans displayed with a pending follow request.

I've always wanted a way to check if a particular user follows me or not. Hence this feature. Hope you guys find it useful, do let me know about your views.

Fri, 18 Mar 2011 07:21:00 -0700 Start twitter all over again http://blog.justunfollow.com/start-twitter-all-over-again http://blog.justunfollow.com/start-twitter-all-over-again
I've often heard users wanting to start twitter on a clean slate. They've wanted a way to unfollow everyone they were following and start from friend count 0.

There are a lot of reasons for this. Usually, when we sign up on twitter, not knowing what to do, we start following random users. After some time we realize they are not the exact fit. Besides, there's always the unwanted DM spam that people want to get rid of. I can list a lot of uses but what the heck, you get my point.

To make it easy to unfollow all your friends on twitter and start twitter like a new user without having to change your twitter account, we've just introduced a new feature that let's you do exactly this, unfollow everyone that you are following on twitter.

Click the 'Show Friends' button and you would be able to see a list of users you follow on twitter. Hit the unfollow button until there are no friends left!

P.S. All rules related to unfollow that have been set by twitter would still apply.

Visit JustUnfollow today to try this feature!

Sun, 13 Mar 2011 03:03:01 -0700 "html" is the new "do" http://blog.justunfollow.com/html-is-the-new-do http://blog.justunfollow.com/html-is-the-new-do Cryptic title eh? Well, it'll make sense if you read this post.

Up until now, all the extensions on JustUnfollow ended with a .do extension (it's the default extension provided in the framework I use). I thought it was better to have an extension that was more popular and what better choice than .html!

As of this writing, code has been pushed out making all the links in JustUnfollow end with .html. I've handled the old URLs by doing a permanent redirect to the new ones. I'm hoping nothing breaks and God Google does not punish us for this sin.

P.S. All your old bookmarks (if you've been kind enough to bookmark us) would still work properly so nothing to worry about. You do not really need to do anything, this post is just an FYI.

It's been 1 year since JustUnfollow was launched. Within a few days of launch it was profiled on TechCrunch by Michael Arrington. If not for TechCrunch, I really do not know if JustUnfollow would have received the kind of traffic it is receiving now. Sure, the TechCrunch traffic lasts only for a couple of days. But those few days are more than enough to start the ball rolling for any website.

Here are some of the stats I thought you would like to know about JustUnfollow:

0.5 Million unique visits every month.

210,000 registered users.

58 Million unfollows done until now (which roughly indicates 150,000 unfollows per day)

120,000 twitter followers for @justunfollow

Here's hoping this year would be more exciting. I hope you help me spread the word about JustUnfollow.
